The Accounting Technician Qualification
The Accounting Technicians Ireland qualification is divided into two parts, each of which is a qualification in its own right.
- Certificate for Accounting Technicians
- Diploma for Accounting Technicians
Each part is a separate qualification and successful completion of both year leads to the full Diploma for Accounting Technicians.
Both awards are designed to address the strong market need in all Irish sectors for qualified Accounting Technician professionals, and also to support the continuing development of those already employed.
Qualification Structure
The Certificate for Accounting Technicians offers a progression pathway into the Diploma for Accounting Technicians. In order to receive the Certificate for Accounting Technicians you must successfully complete the following subjects:
- Financial Accounting
- Taxation
- Law & Ethics
- Business Management
For the Diploma for Accounting Technicians you are required to gain experiential learning through two years full-time employment (or the equivalent part-time), in addition to successfully completing the following subjects:
- Advanced Financial Accounting
- Advanced Taxation
- Management Accounting
- Integrated Accounting Systems
Alignment and Recognition
The Certificate for Accounting Technicians is a QCF Level 4 award in the UK and Northern Ireland and is aligned for Level 6 of the Irish National Qualifications Framework (NFQ) in the Republic of Ireland.
The Diploma for Accounting Technicians is a QCF Level 5 award in the UK and Northern Ireland and is aligned for Level 6 of the Irish National Qualifications Framework (NFQ) in the Republic of Ireland.

What's an Accounting Technician?
Accounting Technicians are qualified accounting professionals that work at all levels of finance. They can work in all types of organizations and are widely employed throughout the public sector, industry and commerce and in private accountancy practices.
A wide range of finance roles
They are involved in the day-to-day practical work of accountancy and play a key operational role in producing reliable financial information. Accounting Technicians can perform a wide range of finance roles, from accounts staff to financial controller and beyond. For instance, they can do financial accounting and budgeting, costing and credit control, payroll administration and tax returns. More experienced Accounting Technicians may often perform senior managerial tasks and audits.
What are the entry requirements?
The entry requirements for our accounting qualification are set out below. These are the minimum standards required of prospective students.
Mature Student Entry Route (Over 21 years of age)
If you are 21 years of age you can apply to enrol as a student on the basis of your age and experience rather than on your educational background. This is often helpful to people who want to return to work after an absence.
School Leaver Entry Route (Under 21 years of age)
School leavers from the Republic of Ireland must meet one of the following criteria:
- Leaving Certificate with five passes on Ordinary Level papers. (Passes to include English and either Mathematics or Accountancy).
- Leaving Certificate with four passes of which at least two are on Higher Level papers. (Passes to include English and either Mathematics or Accountancy).

Post Leaving Certificate/Further Education entry route:
Students who have successfully completed a nationally recognized qualification such as HETAC, FETAC (Level 5), QCA or a BTEC National Diploma may be eligible to enter and gain exemptions from certain exam subjects.
